Our Politics and International Relations books encompass a global perspective and showcase some of the world’s most valued political scientists, philosophers and thinkers. We have a growing portfolio with topics ranging from environmental politics to human rights, democracy to peacebuilding, urban political economy to the American presidency. This diverse scholarship captures the dynamic nature of the political landscape, attracting a broad audience.
A strong foundation in political theory
While our publishing already included several Politics journals, such as Parliamentary History (1994) and Journal of International Political Theory (2005) under its former title Politics and Ethics Review, the ambitious journey of the list truly began when our current CEO Nicola Ramsey became a Commissioning Editor in 1996. Keith Faulks’s Citizenship in Modern Britain, Mark Cowling’s The Communist Manifesto, and Ian Fraser’s Hegel and Marx: The Concept of Need launched the list in 1998. Nicola also commissioned our highly successful Taking on the Political series. Today, our thriving collection of books on political theory continues to provoke and inspire critical enquiry.
Drawing from our deep expertise in political theory, we broadened our portfolio to include a wider range of topics. By introducing several new series, we enhanced the list focus and established a distinct identity. Among the many highlights on the list is our Intelligence, Surveillance and Secret Warfare series which explores the full spectrum of spying and security activities in a globalised world.

A wider focus on diverse, less represented topics and voices, alongside our increasing emphasis on women’s contributions to the field, has been a significant area of evolution. Our dynamic Thinking Politics series includes some of our best-selling titles on Martha Nussbaum and Judith Butler.
Critical military studies and critical feminist perspectives
The well-established Advances in Critical Military Studies series showcases our commitment to presenting insightful, interdisciplinary and high-quality research. These important works challenge how militarism, militarisation and war assemble and disassemble worlds touched and shaped by violence. We are excited by our latest series, Edinburgh Feminist Studies in Peace, Violence and Justice, which is the home of feminist-informed, postcolonial and decolonial research into possibilities for a more just and peaceful world. The first book in this series arrives in May 2025. New books on peace and conflict studies more broadly are also in the pipeline.
What’s coming next?
We recently changed our list name from ‘Politics’ to ‘Politics and International Relations’ to reflect its rich and expansive coverage. We look forward to collaborating with a diverse community of authors, editors and reviewers committed to advancing scholarship and influencing how we understand our evolving world.
Further developments include Nancy Fraser and Politics by Marjan Ivković and Zona Zarić (December 2024), which will demonstrate Fraser’s socialist feminism and the unique potentials of her work for informing transformative political action. John Keane’s Thinking About Democracy in Turbulent Times: Sorbonne Lectures (May 2025) will encourage us to explore the unexpected connections between thinking and democracy amid rising global anxiety and widespread political unrest. Michael J. Shapiro’s Negotiating Civic Life: Literature, Film, Politics will take us on a ground-breaking politically attuned journey through civic life.
